In terms of response, this was one of the most interesting quizzes we've done. I knew I would not fool the Vincent experts, but I did not expect to be overwhelmed by dozens of quick answers, most of which were correct. The first was from Lindsay Brooke, who identified our quiz picture as the Vincent Amanda just three minutes, 59 seconds after I sent out my Motohistory Update Notification.
The Vincent Amanda Recognition
Brooke, from Plymouth, Michigan, is the co-author of "Triumph in America" and has published an article about the Vincent Amanda. Brooke not only correctly identified the Amanda but sent us a fine account based on his research for his previously published article.
Lindsay's Contribution
The rather neglected looking hull in the photo is a Vincent Amanda water scooter. The world's first "personal watercraft" predates today's JetSkis and Wave Blasters. Named for the daughter of British businessman E. Werner, it was produced by Vincent in '57 and '58 after the company had ceased production of its famous V-twin motorcycles.
Combining Innovation and History
The forward-thinking Philip Vincent assembled a team to develop the Amanda, sensing an opportunity when the concept was pitched to him. It featured a unique throttle/steering linkage, bright colors, and innovative components, marking a significant chapter in traveling through water, an experience akin to the sensation of riding a motorcycle on open roads.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Despite initial promise, the Amanda saga ended in tragedy. Engine heat issues and unstable resin used in hull production culminated in a public demonstration that saw the Amanda sink. With the unfortunate passing of veteran Vincent employee Johnny Penn during a test, the potential market for this pioneering craft in the U.S. dwindled, leaving Amanda as a rare collector's piece today.
Abraxas Bultaco: A Road Trip Remembered (3/31/2009)
In 1971, a trio of young Ohio men embarked on a road trip that sparked the idea of a Bultaco franchise, ultimately leading to the creation of Abraxas. Inspired by the beautiful Crater Lake and their shared love for dirt bikes, they began an adventure that would establish a popular dealership and a lasting legacy in the world of motorcycles.
Red and Helen's Excellent Adventure (3/30/2009)
Charles "Red" Wolverton's record-breaking runs on a four-cylinder Ace, alongside his wife Helen, showcased the exhilarating journey of long-distance rides. Despite occasional mechanical challenges, these rides represented the ultimate sense of freedom and exploration, closely paralleling the ethos of traveling, where the journey often supersedes the destination.
